Freedom is Not Free
By Amy Willis

From the time Patrick Henry cried, “Give me freedom or give me death” , our country’s freedoms have been under attack. After the revolutionary war, our country obtained Freedom from England. The price that we paid was great. Some lost their sons and Fathers, wealth and health. Since then, America has fought many other battles for freedom, within and without it’s borders. Freedom! Now it is the expected, our due right to have. Fight and pay a price for freedom? In this welfare society, such thinking is absurd. Now our cry is, “Give me freedom as long as it doesn’t cost ME anything”

As a nation we have forgotten that there is nothing on this earth that is free. Someone must pay. In advertising and charity the word FREE is cunningly used. Free meal, free ticket, free gift, free service, ad infinitum. Lottery has further deadened our minds to getting something free. We are all consumed with Getting not Giving. But let this sink into our hearts and minds, what is free to one has cost another something! It is the same with Freedom from Tyranny.

What is Freedom? The Freedom our founding Fathers bought was Freedom of Religion, Press and Speech. But more than that, it was Freedom from Tyranny and dictatorship and Evil. Our country’s freedom was not meant to be used to encourage sin and allow all sorts of “lifestyles” to flourish.

What is the price of Freedom? Time, energy, strength, sweat, money and sometimes blood. Are we too busy striving for the “American Dream”? If our Forefathers used “making a living” and prosperity as an excuse to not stand for what is right, where would we be? They were the ones who paid the price for the Freedom we enjoy and abuse. God help us!

Our Forefathers knew the distress and oppression of Tyranny. That is why they risked their lives fleeing it and later fighting it. At the 1787 Constitutional Convention, our first President, George Washington said, “If to please the people we offer what we ourselves disapprove how can we afterward defend our work?”

Since September 11, patriotism has been display all over our country. Still, the fear and uncertainty prevail. Signs all over our city have said, “GOD BLESS AMERICA!” The important question is Will He? There is an answer and there is something we can do for our nation and God given freedoms. “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” (Proverbs 14:34). “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord. . .” (Psalm 33:12). “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.” (Psalm 9:17).

More laws and regulations are not the answer. Such will only diminish our freedoms further. We need a call to righteous living and making the Lord our God, only then can we expect God to bless our great country and continue the freedoms we have take for granted.
